about

Pancrace is a unique improvising quintet comprising French, British and Austrian performers. The members include Prune Bécheau (baroque violin, organ), Arden Day (landscape piano, organ, boîte à bourdons, hurgy toys), Julien Desailly (uillean pipes, hulusi, flutes), Léo Maurel (organ, boîtes à bourdons, hurgy toys) and Jan Vysocky (pi synth, AM radio, microphones) ; the combination of unorthodox sound sources has led them to free playing and group composing.

Pancrace is the name of the church in Dangolsheim Alsace were the entire material was recorded over a week in April 2015 but it is also next to where the instrument inventor Léo Maurel lives. Though coming from different musical backgrounds Bécheau (a member of Urs Graft Consort), Day (who with Vysocky released Unbehagen on which features a track recorded during the Pancrace sessions), Desailly (who plays in a duet with Maurel) and Vysocky have developped a strong creative relationship with Maurel over the years and who is known for his ingeniously designed instruments inspired by the hurdy gurdy. In Pancrace one can hear many of his shape-shifting (contextual) instruments and devices (mortorised bow) being twiddled without knowing which are bowed, plucked, hammered or rubbed ; some of Maurel’s latest instruments were presented at the Tate Modern last year.

Pancrace starts in the confinement of a prepared organ ; a Cyclops puffing its continuous and raucous breath is being woken up by instruments who like horseflies mischievously start tormenting him with microtones and striated polyrithms but it all ends four sides later with the language of the birds imposing its unadorned silence on the church.
